Steelhead fishing question?

Do steelhead spawn like salmon?. I’m interested in going on a fishing trip to the salmon river, NY and I abousolutly have no idea how to catch them. Any suggestions?

Steelhead do spawn like salmon with one major difference. Steelhead do not die after they spawn.

Favored methods for steelhead vary from place to place, so you might want to check with local tackle shops or guide services before giving it a go. However, here are a few tried and true methods that are popular.

1. Fresh salmon roe cured in various fashions fished on a sliding sinker rig with leaders of fluorocarbon in the 2 to 3 foot range. The clearer and shallower the water the lighter the line you will need to fool a smart old steelhead.

2. Various plugs fished behind drift boats or using planers are also effective. Hot shots, wiggle warts, wee warts and small quickfish are all effective. Silver, black prism, chartruese, pink and gold are all popular patterns/colors.

3. Spinners such as panther martins, silver fox, and spoon like little cleo’s are also vary good.

4. Small marabou jig fished below a pencil float is also popular in certain areas. Purple and egg sucking leach colors seem to be popular.

5. Last, but certainly not least, fishing night crawlers with or without spin-n-glows is also very good from time to time.

The last piece of advice I will give is to be patient and persistant. I love steelhead fish so I think that your patience will be rewarded, but steelhead can be picky. If you vary your methods and presintations you will catch them. Good luck!
